Spring has sprung which means that sweethearts are tying the knot all over the county. No wedding is complete without a sweet treat by the end of the night. We sat down with Amy Recinos, cake artist, instructor, and owner of Amy's Creative Cakes in Quakertown to find out all about wedding cake traditions and what trends are happening right now.

Wedding cake is a long time honored tradition that started back in Ancient Rome when the groom would break a loaf of bread over the brides head to symbolize fertility and good fortune. The tradition has since morphed into beautiful pieces of sugary-sweet artwork that are carefully sliced and often stuffed into the mouths of the happy couple. Either way the cake tradition is an expected part of most wedding celebrations, but a lot has changed since the days of a simple loaf of bread. “Trending for the 2015 wedding season are pleats, lace, vintage or romantic looking cakes, textured buttercream is popular,” says Amy, a resident of Quakertown.

If you are like a lot of millennials currently planning or involved in a wedding you are most likely seeing some of the cake trends on Pinterest like the chalkboard cakes that look just as they sound with delicate chalk-like designs or the popular ‘naked' cake.  “The naked cake is a stacked cake with little or no icing.  This style of cake is usually decorated with fresh fruit, crystalized flowers or fresh flowers,” Amy explains.

This year brides are opting for both traditional and trendy colors inspired by the Pantone Color of the year, Marsala.  “This color looks similar to a red wine color; playing off this color for 2015 is a lot of pink.  Metallic colors such as shiny gold and copper are trending and are also paired with the pink tones,” Says Amy.  “Metallic colors can be hand painted on a buttercream cake or they can be fondant accents on a cake.”

When it comes to cake Amy has seen it all.  Her company specializes in wedding cakes, custom cakes,  and cupcakes of all kinds including cupcake towers. In addition to this they offer cookies, candy, and another popular wedding trend, custom designed dessert bars and candy favor bars.  Amy explains, “Dessert Bars are also trending this year with a small wedding cake.  The dessert bars are festive and satisfies many guests with a lot of flavor.  Some sweet ideas for a dessert bar are cookies, brownies, lemon bars, fresh fruit, and candy.”

One thing is for sure Amy loves her super sweet job getting to provide beautiful delicious treats for the Brides and Grooms of Bucks County, “I love what I do and my kitchen is my playground.”  Amy explains what is popular for the Bucks County wedding in 2015, “My Bucks Brides and Grooms this year are favoring Buttercream cakes with a lot of texture including the rosette look.  We are seeing a lot of outdoor barn weddings or weddings held at wineries.  The theme this year is rustic for my Bucks Brides.  They have a lot of pink accents or fresh flowers in the cakes with a hint of gold.”
