Rodgers & Hammerstein’s A Grand Night for Singing

July 2nd July 22nd

The season will launch with A Grand Night for Singing by Rodgers and Hammerstein, directed by Tony® Award nominee and Emmy Award® winning Lonny Price. From “Oh, What a Beautiful Mornin’” to “Some Enchanted Evening,” this 1993 Tony® Award-nominated musical revue features over 30 of Rodgers and Hammerstein’s greatest hits.

Ted Chapin, President and Executive Director of The Rodgers & Hammerstein Organization had great things to say about our area: “Bucks County was such an important place in the life of Oscar Hammerstein II.  In Highland Farm he had a retreat where he did much of his creative work.  The fact that a Rodgers & Hammerstein show – and one that celebrates the whole collaboration – is reopening the legendary Bucks County Playhouse is a thrill to us all.”

The Playhouse also announced that on Thursday, July 5th there will be a Gala Performance of A Grand Night for Singing. Proceeds from the gala will support the continued restoration of the Playhouse.

A pre-show cocktail party will be held at Martine’s RiverHouse Restaurant (14 East Ferry Street) and a post-show reception at Marsha Brown (15 South Main Street). All information can be found on the Bucks County Playhouse website.

Neil Simon’s Barefoot in the Park

August 7th August 26th

The second summer show will be Barefoot in the Park by Neil Simon. It was first seen on the Bucks County Playhouse stage nearly 50 years ago (prior to its original 1963 Broadway run).  It is an iconic and beloved play about the trials and tribulations of two newlyweds on the top floor of a New York brownstone.  From what we’ve heard, this show will treat its audience to a night full of laughter.  Barefoot in the Park will be directed by Tony® Award nominee Sheryl Kaller (2010’s Tony® Award-nominated new play, Next Fall).

When asked about the showing, Neil Simon had this to say: “I am so delighted that the Bucks County Playhouse, such an important place in my creative life, will be up and running again. For it to feature, in its renaissance season, one of my own plays is icing on the cake.”

It's a Wonderful Life: A Live Radio Play

December 4th – December 30th

Directed by Gordon Greenberg, choreographed by Lorin Latarro, and inspired by the classic American film, It’s a Wonderful Life, It’s A Wonderful Life: A Live Radio Play is performed as a 1940s live radio broadcast in front of a studio audience. This beloved American holiday classic, that tells the story of idealistic George Bailey as he considers his demise one fateful Christmas Eve, comes to captivating life with the help of an ensemble that brings over two dozen characters to the stage. It premiered in 1996 and has since been produced countless times around the country to critical acclaim.

Jed Bernstein commented that, “In planning the 2012 launch, we wanted to accomplish three very important goals:  return live music to our stage, return to the Bucks County Playhouse legacy of producing plays, and raise the quality of the performers and performances. These two productions allow us to accomplish that, as does our return to an Actors’ Equity contract.”

Cabaret Performances

July 19th – July 21st and August 16th – August 18th

In addition to its summer and holiday productions, the Bucks County Playhouse will present a cabaret series Thursday, July 19 – Saturday, July 21 at 11:00 pm, and Thursday, August 16 – Saturday, August 18 at 11:00 pm at Havana Restaurant & Bar (105 South Main Street). December dates will be announced soon.   Playhouse cast members will step outside of their traditional roles to perform in a 45-minute cabaret style show.  The July edition will be hosted by award winning playwright and long time Bucks resident, Christopher Durang.
