Rain couldn’t dampen the spirit of approximately 10,000 residents and the local business community, all of whom enthusiastically supported the 17th annual Newtown Welcome Day. Held Sunday, May 7 along Sycamore Street in downtown Newtown, Welcome Day was sponsored by the Newtown Business Association (NBA).
Monument Bank, a proud NBA member and gold sponsor of Welcome Day 2017, also called the Newtown Street Fair with Flair, awarded a brand new iPad to Debbie Paikoff, age 58 of Holland. Debbie’s name was randomly chosen from hundreds of entries submitted during the event.
“The energy and pride shown by the folks in Newtown was truly inspiring,” said Dalelyn Colquhoun, Newtown Office Branch Manager, Monument Bank. “Even though the weather didn’t cooperate, thousands of people were singing, dancing, waving American flags and enjoying each other’s company. We at Monument Bank could not be prouder to be part of this community.”
Once again, the Passport Challenge was a hit, with hundreds of participants visiting sponsor booths to have their event passports stamped with emojis so they could get in the running to win an Apple Watch. The first-ever Snapchat Challenge took the event by storm as attendees flooded the NBA Snapchat account with their Welcome Day Snaps to win a cash prize. Newtown Welcome Day entertainers included musicians, vocalists, mummers, magicians, circus performers, fencers, and a colonial re-enactment militia.
An outdoor event that involves dozens of booths and tents for sponsors, activities and food vendors, along with three stages of music and entertainment, requires significant planning and coordination. Monument Bank would like to congratulate the Newtown Welcome Day committee members and volunteers, and the 10,000 people who braved the weather, for making this annual event such a success.
Event organizers have already received positive feedback and helpful suggestions and look forward to working on Newtown Welcome Day 2018. The Newtown branch family from Monument Bank at 33 Swamp Road expects to be back next year to support this wonderful event as they continue to build strong relationships with families and businesses in the local community.
