Grey Nun Academy, the independent, Catholic, coeducational elementary school in Bucks County, PA, earlier this month conducted a book drive to benefit the Books For Africa program. Over 1,200 pounds of books were collected for the non-profit organization that works to end the book famine in Africa. This is the 3rd year the school has participated in this international community service effort.
Under the supervision of Jeri Fox, campus ministry director, Grey Nun Academy students, parents, teachers and staff collected hundreds of books over the past few weeks for children of all ages. Books For Africaships these books to rural school libraries, orphanages, adult literacy programs, and community resource centers across the continent.
“Once again, the Grey Nun Academy community has proven their generosity with the outpouring of books we’ve received,” said Jeri Fox. “Each day, as more and more books were donated we were so pleased to see how many young people we will be reaching and how many futures we will be brightening with the gifts of knowledge and imagination that reading provides. We were lucky enough to get every type of book needed, from young children's books to classic novels to even elementary, high school and college text books.”
“The Books For Africa drive reminds our students of their responsibility to help those less fortunate not only locally, but worldwide,” said Deborah Kost, GNA Head of School. “This charity allows our school community to live our mission of spreading light into this world through compassion and stewardship.”
Grey Nun Academy began a relationship with Books For Africa three years ago to spread the mission of learning and support to those throughout the world with fewer resources and opportunities. This year’s effort marked the conclusion of one of several humanitarian efforts that are conducted annually and are grounded in the mission of the Academy.
The Books for Africa organization represents the largest shipper of donated text and library books to the African continent, shipping over 35 million books to 49 different countries since 1988. For more on this program, please visit www.booksforafrica.org.
