Every single day, members of our community dedicate their time, resources, and effort towards making Bucks County a better place. These everyday heroes are a big part of what makes Bucks County such a wonderful place to live.  At Bucks Happening, we are dedicating a new feature to recognizing these individuals, our local everyday heroes.

Seventeen years ago, Craig Sumsky was heading back from working a gig in Philadelphia with his friend.  It was 2 o’clock in the morning, and as they were driving on I-95 approaching the Allegheny Ave exit, they came across a serious car accident.  Help hadn’t arrived yet, so instinctively, Craig pulled over onto the shoulder and darted across two lanes to try and reach the injured passengers.  However, before he could get to the victims, he was struck by a car and sent flying through the air.

The car had clipped his leg and he had shattered his pelvis, ultimately resulting in an amputation.  He may have lost his leg in the horrific accident, but Craig certainly did not lose his positive attitude, his ambition and his determination.  It is for these reasons and his courageous action that we deem Craig Sumsky our Happenings Hero.

Nineteen years ago Craig had started Cutting Edge Entertainment, a couple of friends working the club and party circuit as DJs.  Now CEE has blossomed into a booming full service party entertainment company.  Craig currently has 45 employees- DJ’s, MC’s, party motivators, technical and lighting professionals, and administrative staff.  Annually they produce between 300 and 400 events.  Craig has established CEE as a breeding ground for the area’s top talent.  Former employees include Justin Guarini (American Idol Season 1), Lauren O’Keefe (member of the girl pop group, Jada) reality stars, pro-bowl cheerleaders and so many more.  He believes it’s important to create an atmosphere that promotes and encourages young talent and allows them to grow artistically.

Craig says he could not have overcome his injury without his staff, “who do not just replace one leg, but make me a whole virtual octopus”.  He also credits the advancements in technology.  “One of the most obvious obstacles seventeen years ago was heavy lifting, but even though I do more on the planning and booking side these days, as opposed to the volume of events I used to work, the technology has evolved to my advantage.  In a nutshell, what we used to carry in crates, we can now carry on a hard drive the size of a wallet in my pocket, with more music then we’ve ever carried before.”

Craig loves his career not only because he gets to work with great people every day, his clients and his staff, but also because his career revolves around what he is most passionate about- music.  “The jobs I enjoy working most and helping to create are thematic – particularly from the music standpoint. “

Another one of his passions is his hometown.  “I’ve lived in Bucks County since my parents emigrated here from Philadelphia when I was four years old, so it’s where I’m most comfortable.  Funny thing is, you can get the best of almost everything – arts, entertainment, food – without ever leaving Bucks County.  It’s diverse and exciting, yet chill and familiar at the same time.”
