Most of us grew up watching Disney movies and certainly have our favorites.  Cayla Belser is more than a Disney fan, however, those films inspired her career passion of becoming an illustrator.  She is a life long Bucks County girl, native of Langhorne, and now teaches at the brand new Artist's Cellar in Yardley.  We spoke with her about her life as a Bucks County Artist.

BH: Describe your style, how would you tell someone about your art?

CB: My style is very whimsical and definitely has that element of fantasy that is often found in children’s books. I’ve always had an interested in stories that have a strong narrative and that is something that I am always seeking to incorporate in my own art.

BH: Tell us about your experience in the art world so far and how you got started.

CB: When I was little I remember seeing Disney’s Lion King and falling in love with the film, and realizing that people had to draw every bit of the movie to tell their story. I thought that was such a wonderfully beautiful idea and wanted to find a way to do the same thing. I always dabbled in art but it wasn’t until I attend Moore College of Art & Design, located in Philadelphia, that I started to get serious about my art. Moore exposed me many different aspects of the art world and helped me focus my interests. They also gave me the opportunity to intern with a greeting card company (Kathy Davis Studios.)  Since graduation I’ve worked in the animation industry, and more recently started teaching at the newly opened Artist Cellar located in Yardley. I’m also slowly building up my career as a freelance artist. Art is one of those careers where you can acutely experience the highs and lows of industry in rapid succession. That being said, I’m immensely grateful for all of the experiences that I’ve had, and how they have shaped me as an artist.

BH: What keeps you in the Bucks County area?

CB: Bucks County has been my home for as long as I can remember, most of my family, as well as my connections, are local to the area. I have a hard time imagining leaving a place that is my home in every sense of the word. There is also something incredibly wonderful about living in area that is so rich in history and scenery. I love that within an hour’s drive I can either be in the rush of the city or in the quiet of meadow enjoying the local wildlife.

BH: What would you say about the Bucks County art vibe?

CB: Bucks County has a surprisingly active art community. It is easy to get the impression that you would need to take a trip to Philly to find much of a variety of art, but Bucks County is filled with hidden gems. Bucks County has this wonderful classic feeling to their art scene, there are tight knit art communities all over the place. These groups are definitely a little more subtle and less about the current pop culture, but I honestly prefer the intimacy that you can find here.

BH: Do you have artwork that you sell?

CB: I currently don’t have any work for sale but am open to making prints of my work available upon request. I am also open to private commissions. The easiest way to find me is the check out my website.  I can also be found most evenings teaching at The Artist’s Cellar.
