Our Happenings Media logo, designed by LB Design Group

With so much going on in Bucks County, we recently sought some outside help in creating the perfect logo for our newly launched parent company, Happenings Media. We had a loose idea of what we wanted, but simply did not have the time to dedicate to design development.

Like many small business owners, we sometimes have difficulty relinquishing control of a project, especially one as important as a logo.  However, we also know that trying to micro-manage everything can lead to huge problems.   A small business is that much more powerful when they find talented and reliable community partners.  That’s why we are so thrilled to have found a local designer we can trust, Liz Battaglia, of LB Design Group!

Since receiving our logo, we are obsessed with learning more about the talented LB Design Group, and have become increasingly aware of the beautiful impressions their designs have left all over the community- whether it is through logo work, print work, or website design. We wanted to know more about the founder, Liz Battaglia, and find out how she became such a design guru (check out some of their awesome work pictured to the right):

BH: Tell us a little about yourself. Where did you grow up and how did that road lead to design?

LB: I grew up in Yardley, PA with an award winning Art Educator mother and an environmental engineer father, building machines that take pollution out of the air, water and earth. Both of them are hugely creative, and I learned from them every single day. I guess when you breed an artist with an engineer, you get a graphic designer, who uses creative problem solving and artistry to solve the problems of her clients.

BH: So you knew you wanted to be a designer from a young age?

LB: Not a clue!  I always loved fine arts – drawing in particular.  I wanted to be a fine arts teacher like my mom until I was about 16.  That’s when I discovered singing.  I had always loved musical theater, but after a string of successful competitions, I started taking voice lessons and made music my life for the duration of high school. A part of me regretted leaving fine arts on the back burner.

BH: So you were always involved in the arts, but not necessarily design. When did you make the switch?

When I applied to colleges, I was originally looking at music conservatories, but I eventually applied to Ithaca College because I knew they had both a highly respected Music School as well as the well known Park School of Communications.  Something in the back of my mind had me intrigued by advertising.

I originally majored in vocal performance – I was on the opera track until I realized that once singing became my job instead of my hobby; it killed the joy out of it for me. I switched majors to creative writing and eventually to Communications. I still enjoy singing in local theater productions, for weddings and other events, and of course, a good karaoke night.

My real start in graphic and web design came with my first “real” job at the Newtown Athletic Club. Under the direction of Marketing Director Linda Mitchell, I had access to programs I never had before.  I taught myself Illustrator, InDesign, and Photoshop while I was employed there. When members asked Linda who did their graphics, she always gave me full credit.  She encouraged me to take side jobs just to “learn,” and soon after I began to envision a career in freelance design.

BH: How did you launch your own design business?

LB: Though networking in the NBPA and other local groups, I found myself on the board of First Night Newtown and other local committees. I enjoyed working on pieces for various Newtown events, including First Night*, Brewfest and Newtown’s 325th Anniversary. My work in the community created interest in my design services, which led to the birth of LB Design Group, LLC.  I became incorporated and have been going full steam ahead every since!  Now LB Design Group services clients all over the Tri-State area, with strong ties to Newtown and Bucks County.

[*Liz Battaglia won the Zambelli International Prism in Award for Button Design in 2005 as well we runner-up for Poster Design, generating favorable press for the popular Newtown event.]

BH: Now that you’ve been at it for several years, what is your favorite aspect of doing graphic and web design work?

LB: I really enjoy a challenge. I love completely different “flavors” of client.  The client with a well thought out vision who needs help bringing it to life (like Bucks Happening!) to the laid back clients who give me complete creative freedom. My favorite clients are the ones who don’t know what they need, because they are the ones I can help the most!  My favorite thing is that no two days are the same. I enjoy having clients of all sizes from different industries who need different projects. I am never, ever bored!

BH: That’s awesome! I love that you found something you were passionate about by simply keeping your eyes open to the opportunities around you.  It’s so inspirational for others who are trying to find a career they are passionate about. We can’t wait to see more of your work around town!

LB: And for those who don’t know the LB Design Group slogan, take it to heart: “Design & Conquer!”
