JimBishopDoylestown native Jim Bishop (CB West High School '75) is the mastermind behind one of the most recognizable health & wellness brands in Bucks County, the Cornerstone Clubs. Since 1995, his commitment to creating a health & fitness experience has spread like wildfire across the community, now with three locations in Warrington, Doylestown, and New Hope.

Long-time employee, Whitney Proud, passionately explains what makes Jim's vision infectious among his hundreds of employees and thousands of members, “Jim doesn't focus on gaining memberships – he focuses on providing the means for our community to improve their quality of life. He doesn't want someone to join Cornerstone and then never use the clubs or the amenities… he wants them to be inspired to be healthier and take advantage of the amazing resources available to everyone…Jim would love nothing more than to make Bucks County the healthiest community in America, and he works towards that goal every single day.”

With over 1/3 of American adults obese, a condition which contributes to several of the leading causes of preventable death, motivating and teaching Americans how to lead a healthier lifestyle is a big, extremely important challenge to undertake. Jim also ensures that his clubs make an impact beyond the walls of his fitness facilities, partnering with many Bucks County groups like Doylestown Township, Doylestown Parks & Recreation, Warrington Township, New Hope Township, and the Doylestown Hospital.

Jim talked to Bucks Happening about what keeps him motivated as one of Bucks County's Biggest Mover & Shakers of 2013.

BH: What motivates you every morning?

JB: I’m motivated by the passion I have to accomplish a lot of good things.  As long as I’m passionate – I’m motivated.

BH: What’s your idea of a perfect day?

JB: A day where I take every opportunity to make whatever I do, a little better,  and to enjoy it a little more.

BH: Who do you look up to?

JB: I’m 5’4” tall, so I look up to just about everyone.  However, if you’re referring to whom I look up to as mentors, I have a number of them.  If I narrowed it down to two people it would be Eileen Bishop; my wife, and Keith Horlacher; my business partner/CFO.  Between them, I could follow their lead with just about any life situation, and I would be a better person for doing so.

BH: How did you decide to choose the field you are in?

JB: Opening a Health Club in Central Bucks has been a dream of mine since I was a teenager.  I always wanted to make a healthy impact in our community and to motivate people to think differently about themselves – we need to take control of our own health, fitness and happiness in order to live a lot more.   I can’t imagine who wouldn’t want to be healthier and happier.

BH: Which achievement are you most proud of?

JB: Fostering a wonderful family and work environment that has allowed me to always be surrounded by great people.  An achievement that I am grateful for every day.

BH: What has been the biggest challenge you’ve had to overcome?

JB: Understanding that I may not be able to accomplish everything I want, but realizing that if you want to do really good things, others will help you get it done.   It takes a group of inspired people with a collective effort to get the big dreams accomplished.

BH: What is the biggest thing that you’d like to achieve over the next 5 years?

JB: Bring the best of what our great industry has to offer to the Bucks County area through our team of passionate health and fitness professionals, with the help and support of our established community partners.  I believe it will have a major impact on the overall health and wellness of the Central Bucks Community over the next five years and hopefully many more to come.

BH: How do you think your friends & coworkers would describe you?

JB: A nice guy who’s very passionate.   Always seems to be on a mission and walks really fast.

BH: Where’s your favorite spot in Bucks?

JB: I love Bucks County.  There are so many opportunities to enjoy great food, entertainment, culture and the arts.  My favorite?  It has to be Cornerstone.  I know it sounds biased, but I am so proud and thankful of our team to continually enhance and compliment the exercise experience for our local communities.

BH: If you could go back in time and talk to yourself 10 years ago, what advice would you give?

JB: Stay focused on what really matters and what you can control.

Realize that the way we handle adversity is what makes us who we are

Improve the weak link and enhance what’s working.

Always strive for more while appreciating what you have and don’t take anything for granted.

Listen more – talk less

BH: Are you on Facebook, LinkedIn, or Twitter? Let us know where we & others can find you.

JB: The Cornerstone Clubs can be found on all of these social media outlets.  Thanks to Whitney, our Marketing Director, you can find us just about anywhere.   As for myself, I can more than likely be found at one of our Cornerstone Clubs.  I prefer communicating with people, listening to their stories and observing how we’re doing with providing a great experience for our guests.
