On Sunday, August 23rd from 8am to noon at Council Rock North HS, the Council Rock North Choir Parents Association will be hosting the “Off Kilter 5K Fun Run & Games”.

This year the choir has the honor of traveling to Scotland and England to perform in notable historic cathedrals and schools throughout the United Kingdom. To get these talented young performers (and the community) in the spirit, the OFF KILTER event offers an untraditional twist to some Old World sports, Celtic themed entertainment, family fun and games, as well as will helps raise funds for the group’s upcoming trip in February 2016.

“When you think of Scotland, you think of kilts and bagpipes. It seemed appropriate to gear a fundraiser around the choir’s destination”, says Susan Hammond, Off Kilter Coordinator. The Off Kilter events include a 5K Kilt Run through Tyler State Park at 8am, 1K Family Fun Run at 9am, quirky Highland Games open at 10am. Registered participants are asked to wear a KILT for the run…and for fun! But the Off Kilter t-shirts strategically have a kilt imprinted on the lower half so everyone is properly outfitted. Regardless of what bottoms the runners choose to wear, undergarments are required!

With the popularity of mob races, such as running through mud or colored powders, running in a kilt offers that same fun twist. Ironically, running in kilts is more than a gimmick. JWalking Designs provides running kilts that are washable, lightweight for comfort, constructed out of eco-friendly fabric (84% recycled plastic bottles and 16% Spandex to keep their shape) and fashionable, flexible and functional, with zippered pockets. Alison O’Brien, CEO / Co-Founder of JWalking Designs, believes “A Kilt – worn as a show of strength and stamina with significance. A pattern and plaid unites a group of individuals who stand together – and run together – as one.”

The event also boasts Scottish themed Highland Games, though these events do not demonstrate feats of strength and stamina. Like the name implies, these traditional Old World games are a bit OFF KILTER. “We wanted to stick with the Scottish theme but make the events fun and family friendly. So our Caber Toss is actually a pool noodle and our Stone Put is a beanbag boulder”, confides Kate Kay, Council Rock North Choir President. Throughout the day, there will be live entertainment from Bagpipers and Irish Dancers, as well as family friendly stations in Ye Merry Midway like Braveheart Face Painting, Selfie in Scotland photo area, Clash of Candy Clans, save the ducks from the Lochness Monster, make a Tam-o-Shanter hat and much more.
