Bucks County Community College invites the public to a benefit production of The Vagina Monologues at 7:30 p.m. on Friday, February 22, in the Zlock Performing Arts Center at Newtown. The updated 20^th-anniversary version of Eve Ensler’s award-winning play will raise funds for A Woman’s Place.

Updated since it first debuted 20 years ago, The Vagina Monologues is an Obie Award-winning whirlwind tour of a forbidden zone which introduces a wildly divergent gathering of female voices, including a six-year-old girl, a septuagenarian New Yorker, a woman who witnesses the birth of her granddaughter, a Bosnian survivor of rape, and many others. The play is directed by Margo O'Moore and has been described as dramatically funny, tender, provocative and ultimately, political. The format is a series of interviews with a diverse group of over 200 women, offering new perspectives on the complexities of growing up female and the hurdles women face in overcoming misogynist conceptions of the female body.

The event also marks two decades since the founding of V-Day, the global activist movement to end violence against women and girls (cisgender, transgender, and those who hold fluid identities). To that end, there will be a post-performance discussion with representatives from A Woman’s Place, a shelter for abused women.

Tickets for The Vagina Monologues are $10 general admission and $5 for students, with all proceeds benefiting A Woman’s Place. Tickets can be purchased online at www.bucks.edu/tickets or at the door.

The Vagina Monologues is presented in conjunction with “And this is how you are a citizen…”, an exhibition at the college’s Hicks Art Center Gallery through March 12 that explores gender identity and citizenship. Other related events are a poetry reading March 6, and “Creatrix – A Celebration of Women Composers” March 11.

About A Woman's Place

Located in Doylestown, A Woman's Place is the only domestic violence community benefit organization in Bucks County. It was founded in 1976. The organization provides programs and services such as a 24-hour hotline, counseling, support groups, emergency shelter, financial empowerment programs and more.

About The Zlock Performing Arts Center

The Zlock Performing Arts Center is located in the Gateway Center building on the campus at 275 Swamp Rd., Newtown, Pa., where there is ample free parking. The theater is equipped with audio-loop technology for the hearing impaired.
