The U.S has over 300,000 hair salons and each cuts an average of a pound of hair per day*; that's more than 90,000,000 pounds of hair to dispose of each year!

Protecting our environment, especially one as beautiful as Bucks County, is a responsibility that we all share, and Salon Escape of Warrington is stepping up to the challenge in a big way.  Salon Escape, which is part of the Green Circle Salons group, recently started a comprehensive recycling & reuse program that will help significantly reduce their environmental impact on the planet. The program helps the salon to redirect out of water streams and landfills everything once considered as garbage: hair, foils, color tubes, paper, plastics, and liquid chemical waste.

The Salon Escape Team

Here are just a few of the ways that Salon Escape is making an immediate impact on the local environment by prioritizing green standards:

  • Standard Salon Practice: Aluminum foils and color tubes are not being recycled and are sent to landfill.
  • Salon Escape's “Green” Practice: Recycling aluminum uses roughly 5% of the energy required to create virgin aluminum from bauxite. 95% of all aluminum can be recycled over and over again, including the foils and color tubes that are used in salons across North America. GCS Member Salons are taking an environmentally responsible stand and ensure that all metals are properly recycled. This will help to reduce the need for more landfill space, reduce our dependence on non-renewable resources, and decrease the amount of toxins going into our landfill sites.
  • Standard Salon Practice: Hair placed in garbage bags will mummify, continue to fill landfills, and give off methane gas
  • Salon Escape's “Green” Practice: GCS Member Salons will now be diverting all hair out of landfill and into other more sustainable projects. GCS, in connection with various partners, is looking at ways that hair can play an important role in a number of commercial applications. It’s exciting to know that hair can be used on our oceans to help in oil spill clean up and recovery projects. In 2010, Green Circle Salons sent more than 1,000 pounds of hair to the Gulf of Mexico to help clean the BP oil spill.
  • Standard Salon Practice: Excess chemicals including color, perm solutions and ammonia get rinsed down the sink into our water stream.
  • Salon Escape's “Green” Practice: Salon Escape & Green Circle Salons are sending all excess color waste to a hazardous waste facility where they will be incinerated to produce clean energy.

In a time when going green & eco-responsiblity are top of mind, helping both individuals and businesses make changes for the better, Salon Escape is excited to be part of a movement that is helping their industry move in a new direction with exceptional standards of environmental accountability. The beauty industry poses many challenges to the environment, from sourcing of ingredients to disposal of packaging and products. Through their alignment with Green Circle Salons, Salon Escape hopes to ameliorate their ecological footprint by implementing simple green changes that will make both their salon, and the greater industry, more sustainable. Green Circle Salons is 100% traceable and fully accountable for how they handle the materials given to them by Salon Escape.

With this initiative, locals no longer need to choose between being eco- or beauty-conscious. Working with eco-conscious salons like Salon Escape of Warrington can provide the peace of mind of knowing they are taking meaningful steps to keep their communities healthy.
