As allergy season, er…Spring arrives in Bucks County, flowers bloom, trees blossom, and I sneeze and attempt to relieve watery eyes. Because of my seasonal affliction, it’s nice to participate in indoor activities during the peak of the season. I recall in late spring a while back, I went on a first date at the comedy club in Doylestown at Pocos. Isn’t laughter the best medicine?

I was a little curious about Poco’s Comedy Cabaret, as I’d never been. My date had bought tickets and we were ushered upstairs upon arrival where there is a small stage and long tables and chairs set up right near it. It’s a little daunting at first, especially when you’re on a date with someone you barely know. Needless to say, I finished the beer rather fast and ordered another.

The show soon began. It was a very small crowd, but a seemingly enthusiastic one. The main enthusiastic participant being my date who was heckling in a friendly way and throwing out responses that also elicited laughter from the crowd. I soon realized that my date had no reservations about who he was and what he thought was funny. He certainly wasn’t holding back and he made the overall show more fun for everyone else with his comments and exchanges with the comedians.

Eventually, his participation rubbed off on me (the beer probably helped as well) and I chimed in when a joke was made about Lady Gaga. This comment of course brought the attention to us and suddenly it turned to comments like, “I don’t think you’re girlfriend would like that!” to “Oh, you’re not his girlfriend?” Normally, someone may be be very embarrassed or begin to feel awkward, and it was, but it  showed me just how cool and calm we both could be when put in humorous situations and that was a nice surprise for me, who usually ends up doing something goofy or weird to relieve any awkward tension.

Laughter is an easy way to gauge compatibility. Having a sense of humor is usually right up there on a woman’s list of “must-haves,” along with a good personality. If you don’t share the same sense of humor, chances are, it’s just not going to work. If you do, things may be a little easier.

As spring arrives in Bucks County, take the time to stop and literally smell the flowers (making sure you take your allergy medicine, of course!) and while you’re doing that, you might as well laugh along the way!
