What’s it like being a single, twenty-something, gal dating in Bucks County? Follow Single in the Suburbs as she takes us on her dating (mis)adventures! For more fun in between articles, follow her on Twitter.

So it's Valentine's Day, and you’re single…or at least not in a serious relationship. My advice? Skip the pity party and focus on the positives!

For those in casual relationships, Valentine's Day can lead to all sorts of unnecessary pressure; he will feel weird that he only got you a Starbucks gift card and you won't be able to stop thinking about the endless stream of engagement & wedding pictures in your Facebook news feed. I’ve made the mistake of going out on Valentine’s Day with a non-committal “boyfriend” who eventually dumped me, leaving nothing behind but a whole lot of headaches.

Then there's the girl's night out “we love being single” approach, which I tried in Philly another year. While we had a marvelous time at a Stupid Cupid party, I couldn't help feeling a pit inside at the end of the night.

Valentine’s Day in Bucks County = gourmet meals in packed restaurants and inns! In fact, many of the Bucks County establishments are booked solid- serving fish, steak, wine, and fabulous desserts and really, if you're looking for a romantic evening out, you can’t go wrong. If there’s one thing I’ve learned, it’s that the restaurants around Bucks know how to serve up a wonderfully delicious and romantic meal.  A drive along the river or a stroll through New Hope is sure to set the mood. Bucks County certainly doesn’t lack in providing the perfect Valentine's Day atmosphere.

I used to really hate that atmosphere and everything about Valentine’s Day, but I’ve learned to stop the hating, to just celebrate love instead. I know, I know- it sounds cliche and silly, but hear me out.  If you think about it, being able to love is truly a great thing. Your heart goes through a lot over the years and when, in the end, you find that it still works, well, that’s worth celebrating, right? Plus, it keeps you positive. Yes, there’s still bitter me who wants to paint everything black and spend the evening with the 2 men who never disappoint (Ben and Jerry), but there’s another part of me who stepped away from all of the “hate” and learned to just let Valentine’s Day be.

If you do happen to have plans tonight, 1) I’m very happy for you and 2) Make sure you wear a loose fitting dress (so you can enjoy all that delicious food!) If you don't have Valentine's Day plans, don’t spend it wallowing in self pity and sorrow. It will only make you more bitter and less open to chance and possibility. If you must go out, go to a bar like Isaac’s, Triumph, M.O.M.S. or The Green Parrot. The single guys will be out and if all you want is some entertainment, you’ll be sure to find some, at least in my experience.

Once I began looking at this Hallmark holiday in a more positive light, I was able to take it for what it was – a fun celebration of love where you’re actually encouraged to wear pink! (that can't be so bad, can it?) And even if that is still making you barf, perhaps Lea Michelle's amazing voice or Zooey Deschanel’s fun outfits on New Girl will cheer you up? That usually does it for me, anyway.

Have a Happy Valentine’s Day, Bucks County!
