unnamedThis Fitness Tip is presented by Orangetheory FitnessNewtown, a new gym fitness studio featuring energizing group personal training sessions, praised by the New York Times as a “plateau-busting workout.” Orangetheory helps customers members achieve the best shape of their lives through 60-minute workouts broken into intervals of cardiovascular and strength training. A 5-zone heart monitor helps participants burn an average of 900 calories per 60-minute training session and achieve EPOC (excess post-exercise oxygen consumption), which keeps their bodies burning more calories even after the work out is over!

The workout that is sweeping the nation is located in Newtown next to the Newtown Farmer’s Market at 2140 South Eagle Road (in the Village of Newtown South shopping center). Call the studio directly at 215-957-1700 to reserve your spot.

You've most likely heard about it by now, whether at the gym or just browsing through your Facebook feed – people can't stop talking about Total-Body Resistance Exercise, or as it's more commonly referred to, TRX.

As the weather heats up and locals scramble to get their bodies ready for summertime, Ryan Wanner, the Head Trainer at Orangetheory Fitness Newtown, is giving us some insight into why TRX has taken the fitness world by storm.

A Navy SEAL and Stanford MBA graduate, Randy Hetrick, invented the TRX. He needed a way to keep himself and his fellow SEALS in shape during elite special missions. It was very hard to train and stay in shape with limited to no equipment. The foundation of TRX was formed.

Fitness Director Joshua Burkhard leads a Total Resistence Exercise (TRX) session in the hangar bay aboard the aircraft carrier USS John C. Stennis (CVN 74). John C. Suspension training develops strength, balance, flexibility, and core stability simultaneously by using the TRX and the user’s bodyweight against gravity to create the resistance. Just like an Orangetheory Fitness workout, anybody can use the TRX because they are able to adjust the angle to fit any fitness level, whether an elite athlete or beginner.

One of the biggest draws to TRX is its extremely low injury rate by the users. By using their own bodyweight against gravity, rather than an external source of weight, users are able to achieve high results while keeping injury rates extremely low. For example, performing a bent over low row without proper form may put extra stress on the lower back. Whereas a TRX low row on an angle that is very challenging will hit the same muscles, including the lower back, without putting it in a position for injury. It is also very good at working the stabilizer muscles in the shoulders and core, which again will help prevent injury and increase performance.

The TRX is fully integrated into the physical training of all four branches of the military and is also being used by many athletes of the MLB, NFL, NHL, NBA, UFC, and especially with college and high school athletes. The next time you perform an exercise on the TRX, know that you are performing the same exercises that high level athletes and military personnel are performing around the world.

So if you're looking for a new routine that can help you tone up in time for summer without a high-risk of injury, incorporate TRX training. At home kits are available and fitness facilities throughout Bucks County, including Orangetheory Fitness, can help you get started.
