On Thursday, November 11th, we commemorate United States veterans past and present, and there are no shortage of local events to mark the occasion. With the non-stop political buzz surrounding the recent midterm elections, we can appreciate our civil liberties more than ever. Let's take some time this week to honor those who have so valiantly fought to protect them.

BENSALEM

The Disabled American Veterans Chapter 85 in Bensalem will hold a service at 11 a.m. Thursday at Rosedale Memorial Park, 3850 Richlieu Road including a musical service and speeches to honor veterans.

In Eddington, the Harry T. Clunn VFW Post 9220 (1236 Lavender Road) will also host a ceremony Thursday.  Members & public attendees will gather at 11 a.m. for a ceremonial wreath laying.

BRISTOL

At 11am on Thursday, the Robert W. Bracken American Legion Post of Bristol will conduct a Veterans Day service. Technical Sgt. Carl M. Wise II of Joint Base McGuire-Dix in Burlington County will be the guest speaker at the Harriman Veterans Memorial Monument on Pond Street in Bristol. This service is open to the public and all are welcome.

Enjoy a complimentary breakfast Thursday morning at the James Gallagher Community Center, and then dance along with the Mummers until 2 p.m. at the center, 2501 Bath Road in Bristol (for veterans only).

BRISTOL TOWNSHIP

Warm up with a cup of free coffee with the Lower Bucks County Disabled American Veterans from 9 a.m. to noon every day at 5915 Emilie Road in Bristol Township.

Heads up at 7p.m.  as the Delaware Valley Vietnam Veterans Headquarters will release orange balloons. Thursday at 800 Coates Ave. in Bristol Township to recognize veterans affected by Agent Orange, the code name for one of the herbicides used by the U.S. military during warfare.

The John Billington Veterans of Foreign Wars Post 6495 will hold its annual service to honor veterans at 11 a.m. Thursday at 1605 Haines Road in Bristol Township.

FALLSINGTON

American Legion Post 834 will hold an 11 a.m. memorial Thursday at the Fallsington Commemorative Park Gazebo and Veterans Memorial off Yardley Avenue across from the post in Falls.

MIDDLETOWN

Middletown Veterans Memorial Park, a 1-acre park near the intersection of Route 413 and Sycamore Ridge Rd, opened at 1 p.m. Saturday, 11/6/2010. It includes a 2,000-pound black granite stone imported from India, etched with the words “Land of the free + because of the brave” with the image of a serviceman at sunset. Also, a Sherman tank used in World War II was moved from the Penndel American Legion Post to the Middletown memorial.

NEWTOWN TOWNSHIP

American Legion Post 440 hosts a Veterans Day ceremony on Thursday, Nov. 11 beginning at 9 a.m. at Council Rock North High School on Swamp Road. The public is invited to attend and veterans will receive free entry as well as a halftime patriotic performance by the Council Rock marching band. David William Jacoby, a high school social studies teacher and a first lieutenant in the U.S. Naval Reserve, will be the guest speaker. .

WASHINGTON CROSSING

The Guardians of the National Cemetery will conduct a Veterans Day ceremony at the Washington Crossing National Cemetery on Thursday, November 11 at 10 a.m. The ceremony includes an invocation by Commander Peter Gregory, U.S. Navy (Retired), welcoming remarks by Darrin White, director of the cemetery; keynote address by Kimberly M. Wright, National Cemetery Administration; placing of the wreath by Gold Star families; a Veterans Day address by Captain Christopher Sherman, USA (Ret.); rifle salute; taps; bagpipe music; and the Solemn Intonation of the Bell led by Major Raymond M. Rauanheimo, USA (Ret.).

WRIGHTSTOWN

A Veterans Day service will be held at 1:30 p.m. on Saturday, November 13 at Wrightstown's township municipal building and new veterans memorial at 2203 Second Street Pike. An open house of the township building will follow. Residents and veterans are invited.

YARDLEY

The Yardley American Legion Post 317 and VFW Post 6393 will have a Veterans Day ceremony at 11 a.m. Thursday at the Yardley Monument on Delaware and Afton Avenues.
