Play Ball!

As the weather warms, all ages will be itching to get outside and stretch their legs. Registration is open NOW for many sports associations in Bucks County, and the benefits of youth sports are undeniable. Participating in sports has shown to build self-esteem, teach sportsmanship and teamwork, show kids how to play within the rules, develop time management skills, and provide safe social interaction. (And then there are the physical benefits, too!)

Spring sports season is usually dominated by baseball, softball, lacrosse, and soccer. Plenty of area options exist for recreational as well as travel teams in those sports. Check out the programs at Central Bucks Athletic Association (CBAA), PENN Athletics Club, Doylestown Athletic Association (DAA), as well as Warrington Soccer Club, Council Rock United Soccer Association, Horsham Soccer Club, Warminster Soccer Club, and the Inter-County Youth Soccer League.

What's Out There for Younger Kids?

For those with younger children looking for a more relaxed introduction to a sport, there are several area options. Soccer Shots operates in several different communities in the area, offering soccer for ages 2 to 8. The program focuses on fitness and sportsmanship as well as individual accomplishments. Little Kicks Soccer is a similar program with classes for ages 18 months to 5 years that focuses on teamwork and cooperation. And Buckingham United Soccer Club offers Lil Bucks for ages 2, 3, and 4. At the area YMCAs, children ages four and up can play beginner lacrosse and t-ball, as well as introductory courses that teach the basics of several sports. Gymnastics, karate, and tennis are also available to those who might want a more individual approach to sports.

What's New?

In addition to the more traditional spring sports, a relatively new organized sport is finding its way to area organizations. NFL Flag Football offers participants – both girls and boys – the opportunity to learn the fundamentals of football and enjoy the physical activity of it without the potential danger of the contact version of the sport. Leagues can be found at the PENN Athletics Club in Doylestown and Central Bucks Family YMCA in Doylestown for children, as well as an adult league at the Lower Bucks Flag Football Association in Levittown.
