Not since the days of Zorro has the public been so excited about the classic sport of fencing. Emulating the popular Shrek-spinoff character, Puss in Boots, as well as the latest blockbuster version of the classic Three Musketeers story, it's no surprise that there were so many sword-yielding Halloween costumes in 2011.

Rather than limiting the duels to play-time, however, parents may want to take this opportunity to encourage kids to explore their interest by enrolling in a local fencing course, such as one of the Bucks County Academy of Fencing's November Taste of Fencing Courses in New Hope.

Children AND adults alike are welcome to sign up for one of the Taste of Fencing courses at BCAF. Whether capturing a child's imagination, giving young adults an enjoyable after-school activity, or bringing adults on an active adventure, fencing will teach many valuable lessons in:

♦ Developing good sportsmanship
♦ Instilling self-discipline
♦ Acquiring a healthy competitive spirit
♦ Achieving a healthy body
♦ Practicing strategic thinking

Local aficionados at the Bucks County Academy of Fencing, now with locations in New Hope and Hatfield, have been teaching for over 30 years and experienced such character developments first-hand. Co-owner Lisa Martini points out that, “Whether in school or in sports, if a child is not engaged mentally in the activity–if they are not having fun–they will not achieve excellence. Therefore,” she explains, “the BCAF program focuses on supporting and developing students in a safe group-environment, which improves self-esteem and has a tremendously positive influence on all aspects of their lives.”

The Taste of Fencing course is a great way for a new student to find out if fencing is a great fit for them without having to sign up for a long-term commitment or commit the upfront costs of equipment. The Taste of Fencing program consists of an hour-long class, once a week for three weeks for a fee of $96, which includes use of the required equipment. The only thing that participants will need to buy are $20 fencing glove at the first class.

Please contact Lisa Martini at lisa@bcaf.com or call 215-862-6112 for information on how to register and to confirm space availability.
