The Blue Tortilla New HopeHomemade guacamole, prime people-watching in New Hope, and a BYOB- yes please! The Blue Tortilla Mexican Restaurant is a triple threat.  It can be difficult to find tasty Mexican food in the suburbs; lucky for us, The Blue Tortilla filled that void in New Hope, providing authentic Mexican dishes in a prime New Hope setting since 2004.

Serving fresh-squeezed lime mix for margaritas (note: you have to bring your own Tequila) and hand-made-to-order organic corn tortillas, The Blue Tortilla prides themselves on authenticity and freshness.  The restaurant's ambiance aims to relax diners amid the bustle of town, offering a front row seat to observe the always entertaining streets of New Hope.

On this particular warm June evening, we chose to dine outside.  The patio is spacious & comfortable, offering patrons the option to sit further back from the streets if they desire more privacy.   I recommend grabbing a table away from the landscaping, if possible, in order to avoid the inevitable bugs that accompany humid nights by the Delaware River.

The Blue Tortilla's patio is perfect for people watching in New Hope!

We kicked off our Mexican feast with homemade guacamole and a variety of salsas.  Our basket of crunchy home-made chips was quickly demolished amid a tortilla dipper's paradise.  The guacamole, made with cilantro; tomato; Jalapeño pepper; white onion; Chipilo Cream and Cotija Cheese, had just the right consistency.  The green and red salsas were mild but still provided enough of a kick to satisfy the palate. Want to get crazy? Combine the dips- trust me!

For entrees, we sampled the Enchiladas Verdes, a soft corn tortilla dipped into green tomato sauce with hand-shredded chicken; Cotija Cheese; and Chipilo Cream and the Asado de Bodas, a classic Mexican wedding dish prepared from lean pork meat. Don't expect your food at The Blue Tortilla to look like what you get at your local Mexican chain restaurant.  Blue Tortilla's homemade fare is prepared with complex flavors. Take the Asado de Bodas for example, which is baked with tomatillos; oranges; chocolate and various herbs like basil; cumin; oregano; garlic and Chile, then served in small pieces and covered in a sauce sauce along-side Mexican-style rice & hand-made tortillas. You certainly won't leave The Blue Tortilla hungry! Entrees range between $15 and $30, and many dishes offer vegetarian substitutes.

I took the restaurant's motto to feel at home- “Mi Casa es su Casa” – quite literally, stuffing my face as if I had a Mexican grandmother insisting I finish every last bite.   Capping the night off with a walk across the scenic New Hope-Lambertville bridge was the perfect way to end the evening (and walk off some of that food!)
