Fund A Cure Board Members at the Purple Tie Ball

The event, held recently at Spring Mill Country Club in Ivyland and hosted by Fund A Cure for Pancreatic Cancer, raised $40K.

Fund A Cure for Pancreatic Cancer, a Newtown-based non-profit dedicated to raising awareness about pancreatic cancer and advocating for increased federal funding for research.

The event featured dinner, dancing and a silent auction with prizes such as a vacation to the Bahamas, jewelry, and an overnight stay in Philadelphia accompanied by dinner and show tickets. In addition, all Purple Tie Ball attendees had their pictures taken on the “purple carpet” before entering the event by Ellen Henderson Photography. The event’s attire was a display of purple attire in honor of the disease’s color of awareness.

Pancreatic Cancer researchers Dr. Charles Yeo and Dr. Jonathan Brody and their teams were in attendance at the event, giving guests updates on their research to develop novel treatment methods to kill pancreatic cancer cells before they multiply and metastasize, naming Fund A Cure for Pancreatic Cancer as key funders of two major published bodies of research. These papers published by Jefferson University, one of the nation’s leading Pancreatic Cancer treatment and research centers, have enabled teams across the nation to begin enrolling patients facing this disease in clinical trials with treatment protocols specifically tailored to their tumors, providing better outcome possibilities.

“Pancreatic Cancer is one of the deadliest cancers with only an 8% five year survival rate and it claims more than twice as many U.S. lives as HIV/AIDS each year, with over 40,000 lost to this cancer yearly in the United States. In addition, Pancreatic Cancer is now the 3rd largest cause of cancer death in the United States. The average life expectancy of someone diagnosed with pancreatic cancer today is still only 6 months. November has been dedicated by the U.S. Congress as Pancreatic Cancer Awareness Month since 2003 and purple is the advocacy color for pancreatic cancer,” according to information from the organization.

In the last eight years, Fund A Cure for Pancreatic Cancer has donated $180,000 to the pancreatic cancer research team of Jefferson University Hospital.
