gelish fingertips and tootsies newtownI'm a nail biter.  I never spend any money on manicures, because I've ruined it by the time I've driven home from the salon.  If I haven't ruined it from biting, then I chip it typing on the computer.  Recently,  the lovely ladies over at over at Fingertips and Tootsies Nail Salon in Newtown convinced me to try a new type of manicure: the gelish manicure.

So what exactly IS gelish?  Fern, my manicure extraordinaire (oh, and my cousin 🙂 ) gave me a great explanation of gel nail polishes, and why she chose gelish over some of the other brands.  Gelish has the look and feel of a regular nail polish; ot comes in a similar bottle and is applied with the same brush/cap.  The difference is, gelish has an added ingredient that is activated by UV light (just like most salons already use to dry regular nail polish).  The polish is dried instantaneously (as opposed to semi-drying after 15 minutes and being tacky for over an hour like normal polish).  The best part is that it DOES NOT CHIP for WEEKS!!  It stayed shiny and glassy and beautiful the whole time.

“Well how is this different from the gel acrylic nails that have been available for years” you ask?  Having had both, I can tell you they were very different.  I was skeptical when I first heard about these new soak-off nail polishes, having had to deal with the painful aftermath of gel acrylics.  With gel acrylics, they file your nails down super-thin, as they do with regular acrylic nails. If you have short nails and want longer ones, they will adhere a fake extension nail to your nail bed.  Once you take the acrylics off, your nails are usually as thin as paper, and it's quite unpleasant until your nails slowly recover.  With soak off nail polish, your nails stay in tact.  They do NOT file your nails down, they just buff them a tiny bit and then add a base coat that “creates the adhesive bond between the nail plate and gel products.”

Gelish is not the only soak off polish on the market right now.  The reason that Fingertips & Tootsies went with Gelish over competitors made by brands like OPI.  Fern had two great reasons for this.  One reason has to do with the way that you remove Gelish;  as opposed to soaking your entire finger in acetone, which could be drying, not to mention painful if you have any tiny cuts on your fingers, acetone is applied via a pad, then covered in foil and left on top of the nail for a small period of time.  The other reason is variety, gelish has 48 colors available (chart here), which is far more than most other brands.
