For years, I've listened as trusted friends from various circles enthusiastically shared their positive detox experiences. “You'll never feel better,” they say, or, “The weight just melts off!” I, however, being outright terrified of the idea of giving up my favorites- bread, cheese, and wine- for two weeks had labeled the idea of doing a detox impossible…well, until recently.
What changed my opinion you may ask? At our Elephant's Eye Happy Hour event on February 17th, I found myself talking to local nutritionist, Joanna Chodorowska from Nutrition in Motion. As I sipped my espresso martini and snacked on some fried appetizers, we began to talk about what Joanna is passionate about, nutrition. When the topic of a detox came up, I again slipped into my “I couldn't do it” routine. However, as Joanna talked about some of her favorite detox recipes, I found myself suddenly intrigued. A butternut squash soup, mashed cauliflower, & black bean chili – those recipes didn't sound bad at all!

Joanna explained that her detox remedy was not like the much publicized liquid-only, crash diets. You don't have to survive on a mix of lemon, Cayenne pepper, and maple syrup. In fact, over the two week period, your diet consists of wholesome vegetables, fruits & juices, beans/legumes, nuts, and even some grains (in week 2). I must admit, Joanna had me at potatoes! The foods to skip include dairy, meats, gluten, and basically anything processed. She explained that the idea isn't to starve the body but is to pack it full of the most nutritious, easy-to-process natural foods.
In addition, Joanna provides motivational support, detailed instructions, and an extensive list of recipes. She even hosts detox cooking classes and a bi-annual group detox for added support each summer and winter.
Angela had soon entered the conversation, and having experienced one failed attempt at a very strict detox in the past, she also liked the sound of the Nutrition in Motion cleansing plan. With spring right around the corner, the Bucks Happening team decided that we just couldn't wait. We want to feel healthier, have more energy, and drop that winter weight! Thus, today, February 28, 2011 marks day 1 of our detox. The next two weeks will certainly be a challenge, but we'll have the support of super-nutritionist Joanna Chodorowska, each other, and Bucks Happening to help us through.
Over the next two weeks, we will share the ups and downs of our detox process, in hopes of providing a bit of motivation and information to our readers. Check out a short video below about the prep-process for the Nutrition in Motion Detox plan and stay tuned. Make sure to follow Bucks Happening on Facebook or Twitter for all of the latest.
