Goodbye carefree summer days and hello hectic fall schedules! Back to school is a big adjustment for everyone in a household, including your favorite four-legged friends.
In between all the meetings, back to school nights, and soccer practices, it's important to set aside some much-needed time to properly care for your pooch. Bucks County residents are planning for their pet's most-practical needs in addition to making sure the pups are well-cared for, healthy, and happy.
For busy families, doggie daycare can offer the perfect solution. Doylestown's Holiday House Pet Resort explains why spending long days in an empty house can be challenging for dogs:
Dogs are naturally pack animals. They like to hang out and play with friends. It’s their version of the chatting around the water cooler…or gathering with friends at a favorite “watering hole.” Chances are a walk around the block or a visit to the dog park is never long enough to satisfy their need for socialization with other dogs or people. Group play with lots of different dogs (and people too) builds strong social skills.
Unfortunately, with less time to dedicate to pets, families may also experience an increase in household damage- shoes, furniture, 8-panel wooden doors, toys, and more. Just like with people, lack of excercise and stimulation can lead to sadness, obesity, and sleep problems for dogs. In fact, obesity is a crisis affecting many pets today, with nearly 60% of dogs (and cats) being overweight.
For dogs without the need for full daycare services, fall is also a popular time for pet training. Less time leads to less patience (even with the cutest of dogs!) and training can literally become a lifesaver for pets. Holiday House Pet Resort recently experienced this first-hand:
Frustrated by her dog’s unruly behavior, a client recently brought her young German Shepard, Sadie, to Holiday House Pet Resort for lodging while she located another owner for the dog. Understanding the severity of the situation and confident that professional training would help match the dog with a new owner, the training team at Holiday House Pet Resort began a training session. Sadie lacked basic obedience skills and socialization with people and other dogs which resulted in leash aggression when near other pets. She needed structure and guidance to gain confidence and trust. Sadie responded immediately showing great improvement and was quickly adopted by the owner’s granddaughter. Sadie’s extended family is extremely pleased with her progress, and her new owner continues to reinforce the skills learned during training.
There's no doubt that a well-trained dog is a much greater pleasure to have in the home as well as out in public.
To help locals get acquainted with their services, Holiday House Pet Resort actually hosts a free Puppy Social Hour every Thursday at 7pm and offers training evaluations.
