What makes a “Happening” community? A bustling downtown? Creative, committed locals? Awesome events? No matter what your check-list includes, it's likely that Doylestown will check-off every single box.
This month, we're spotlighting a town that is arguably at the heart of Bucks County- geographically, economically, and culturally. As the county seat of Bucks County, the home of several world-class museums and parks, and the beginning of the Lansdale/Doylestown Septa Line, Doylestown serves as a crossroads for thousands of people each and every day.
Since the Borough of Doylestown was incorporated in 1838, it's played an vital role locally. Notable residents have included architect and archaeologist, James A. Michener, lyricist and playwright Oscar Hammerstein II, the Nobel Prize-winning author Pearl S. Buck, anthropologist Margaret Mead, and pop-rock star Pink.
Attractions including The Mercer Museum, Moravian Pottery and Tile Works, the art deco County Theater, and the National Shrine of Our Lady of Czestochowa bring in a regular stream of tourists. In fact, several U.S. Presidents have paid visits to Our Lady of Czestochowa. A feast for the mind as well as the tastebuds, Doylestown is also home to dozens of acclaimed dining establishments – from innovative tapas at Honey's to cocktails at 86 West to coffee at Zen Den. This unique combination of notable history, rich culture, and delicious dining brought Doylestown national attention last year when it was named one of America's Quirkiest Towns by Travel & Leisure Magazine.
While these highlights are no doubt impressive, what truly keeps a “Happening” community afloat are the everyday stories – the people, places, businesses, and events bubbling to the surface. It's the untold stories, the everyday interactions, that are so often driving a community forward.
