The curtain is about to rise on the Bucks County Playhouse. Under the joint leadership of Peggy McRae, Director of Community Affairs and New York producer Jed Bernstein, these two visionaries are spearheading a second act for the Playhouse, transforming the iconic theater from bankruptcy and returning it to Equity status. Equity status allows the theater to bring live music to productions. McRae and Bernstein are hard at work planning a gala and two phases of renovations; the first to return the building to safety and compliance code. An open house for the community scheduled for February 16 from 5:30- 7:00 will feature a presentation by the architect overseeing the renovations as well as Bernstein who will present his artistic vision for the future.
A “community labor of love”, McRae stressed how a partnership with the Heritage Conservancy helped to rally the community, identify a buyer for the Playhouse, and bring Bernstein to Bucks County. Kevin and Sherri Daugherty, who purchased the playhouse, made the dream of the Conservancy a reality. Through extensive networking, collecting of advice, and random acts of kindness brought the “right people with the right intentions together to ensure the brightest future for the playhouse.” shares McRae.
Early plans for the Bucks County Playhouse include producing pre-Broadway shows that will bring both movie and stage stars to the theater beginning summer 2012. Conversations about a Christmas show during the 2012 holiday season are ongoing. Bernstein shared that he envisions both revivals as well as new work taking shape on the Bucks County Playhouse stage. The ultimate goal is a year-round venue that supports local artists, families and students providing a wide variety of programming.
The Bucks County Playhouse revitalization is not the first of its kind. Using a model implemented by the Westport Playhouse in Connecticut has inspired the community team supporting the New Hope playhouse. Westport staff members have mentored the Bucks team and will continue to do so as the playhouse moves closer to opening day.
Originally an 18th century grist mill, located on Main Street in New Hope, the Bucks County Playhouse currently seats 450 guests for productions. Memberships are currently available at $80 per individual; $160 for families and $500 for businesses. McRae anticipates 1000 memberships the first year. Additional information on annual memberships can be found at 215-315-7788 or www.bcptheater.org.
