We asked Jenny…
What inspired you to pursue your current career or passion?
From a young age, I’ve always been drawn to the beauty and creativity of the outdoors—flowers, plants, and the simple joy of seeing something grow. When I went through a significant life change after my divorce, I knew it was time to shift from being a full-time mom into a career that brought me both personal fulfillment and professional success while still allowing me to be “Mom”. Although I felt uncertain about what exactly to pursue, one thing was clear: I wanted to do something I loved. Gardening had always been my personal passion, whether it was planting seasonal flowerpots at home or designing garden beds for family and friends. I found myself spending hours of time a day outside doing just that! And one day, it sparked an idea of excitement and hope: "I think I can do this professionally!” What began as a hobby became a new chapter of my life. I dove headfirst into learning more about landscaping and running a business, founding my own company, Jenny’s Flowers & Landscaping, four years ago. With every project, I aim to beautify the world around me—one garden, one yard, one landscape at a time. The opportunity to connect with people in my community while enhancing their outdoor spaces truly fills me with a sense of purpose and pride. It has been incredible getting to meet and know so many people in our community. My love for design and nature is not only a passion, but also a way for me to contribute to our community, hopefully making it a little brighter and more beautiful with every project.
What challenges have you faced in your journey, and how did you overcome them?
One of the biggest challenges I’ve faced on my journey is finding balance—specifically, balancing the demands of being a single mother of four while running a growing business. Being a parent is a full-time job in itself, and trying to juggle that with entrepreneurship and volunteer work has, at times, been overwhelming. I am someone who likes to be involved in every aspect of my business—whether it’s meeting with clients, creating estimates, setting up jobs, or physically working alongside my team. While rewarding, this hands-on approach often leaves little room for anything else. To manage this, I’ve had to learn the importance of creating boundaries and making time for both myself and my children. Family time is incredibly important to me, and I work hard to ensure that I’m present for my kids and family despite the demands of the business. I also would be nowhere without my faith in God. I know that I can do all things through Christ who strengthens me, and without my trust in Him, I’d be nowhere. I've also come to rely on regular exercise to help me manage stress and stay grounded. Whether it's a workout session or a quick walk, physical activity helps me reset and refocus. Another important lesson I’ve learned is not to take myself too seriously! While running a business is important, I’ve realized that it's okay to acknowledge that I don’t have to be perfect at everything and that learning to laugh through challenges helps me maintain perspective. It’s this combination of balance, self-care, and humor that has helped me overcome the obstacles of my journey.
How do you define success for yourself?
I define success as knowing, deep in my heart, that I am doing the best I can in all the roles that matter most to me—whether as a mother, daughter, sister, or friend. It’s about ensuring I give back to the community in meaningful ways, whether through donating my time, my resources, or simply lending a helping hand where it's needed. I have a strong belief that success is rooted in giving of oneself and finding ways to uplift others.
Ultimately, success to me is about love—loving others, being loved in return, and
embracing the gratitude for everything that God has given me. It’s the fulfillment I feel from helping others, knowing that I’m contributing positively to the world around me, and remaining thankful for the blessings in my life.
How do you handle setbacks or failures, and what have you learned from them?
Setbacks and failures are an inevitable part of life and business, and I’ve certainly faced my fair share. I believe it’s not the setback itself that defines us, but how we respond to it. For me, although it sounds cliché, setbacks serve as opportunities to learn and grow. When things don’t go as planned—whether it’s a project that didn’t meet expectations or a personal hurdle—I try to take a step back and ask, “What is this teaching me?”
One of the key lessons I’ve learned from failure is resilience. Owning a business, especially in landscaping, has taught me that there are many factors beyond my
control—weather, resources, even unexpected client needs. Rather than dwelling on the frustration, I focus on finding solutions, staying flexible, and pushing forward with determination. Every time I face a challenge, I grow stronger in my ability to adapt. Another important lesson is the value of humility and self-reflection. I’ve learned not to be afraid of admitting when something didn’t work and to embrace the opportunity for growth. Through each setback, I become more attuned to what’s important—whether it’s improving processes, deepening relationships with my team, or ensuring I’m creating time for my family. Ultimately, setbacks remind me to keep things in perspective. Life isn’t about perfection; it’s about progress and persistence. I’ve come to trust that even when things don’t go as planned, there is always something valuable to be learned.
How do you prioritize and set goals for both short-term and long-term success?
When it comes to setting goals, I believe in having a balance between the immediate and the future, while keeping my core values in mind. For short-term success, I focus on the most urgent and impactful tasks. Whether it’s completing a project for a client or improving internal processes within my landscaping company, I break larger tasks into manageable steps. This helps me stay organized and allows me to see consistent progress, which keeps both me and my team motivated. I also set priorities by understanding what will have the greatest benefit, not just for the business but also for my family. As a single mom, I need to manage my time efficiently, ensuring I’m present for my children while still advancing in my career. This means I’m constantly evaluating what needs my attention most at the moment and adjusting accordingly. For long-term success, I set goals that align with both my personal and professional vision. For example, my goal of expanding Jenny’s Flowers & Landscaping came from a long-term vision of building a business that not only beautifies the community but also creates jobs and gives back to local causes.
At the heart of it all is my desire to keep growing while staying true to who I am—someone who values faith, family, community, hard work, and giving back. By prioritizing what matters most and staying adaptable, I hope to achieve both short-term wins and long-term fulfillment.
What impact do you hope to leave on the world through your work?
Through my work, I hope to leave an impact in some small way on our community.
Landscaping has allowed me to achieve a goal of mine of leaving the world a little more beautiful and welcoming than it was before.
In addition to my professional work, I am deeply passionate about giving back through volunteer efforts that speak to my core beliefs. My involvement with the Travis Manion Foundation has allowed me to support our nation's heroes and their families, honoring those who have served and sacrificed. It is nothing short of an honor to be involved in the foundation, if even in a very small way. Being actively engaged in Pro-Life work and Adoption advocacy, has allowed me to help vulnerable individuals and families in ways that reflect my commitment to the sanctity and dignity of life.
At the heart of whatever it is that I’m doing—whether through work or volunteering—is my faith. It guides me to serve others, to love unconditionally, and to give back where I can. Whether it’s through beautifying spaces, supporting causes that matter, or simply being there for someone in need, I aim to leave an imprint of kindness, compassion, and service. I believe that true success is measured not just by what we accomplish for ourselves but by the positive impact we have on others.
What role does community play in your life and career?
Community plays an important role in both my life and career. It’s at the heart of everything I do, from running my landscaping business to volunteering my time with causes that I deeply care about. As the owner of Jenny’s Flowers & Landscaping, I’m fortunate to work closely with members of my community every day. Whether I’m designing a garden for a local family or helping a neighbor create a beautiful outdoor space, I see my work as an opportunity to build stronger connections within the community. Each project is more than just a job—it’s a chance to bring people together, create lasting beauty, and contribute to the collective well-being of the neighborhood.
Beyond my business, community is where I find purpose and fulfillment through service. Volunteering with the Travis Manion Foundation has connected me to a broader mission of honoring and supporting our veterans and their families. My involvement in Pro-Life work and Adoption advocacy is deeply rooted in my belief that we must take care of one another, especially the most vulnerable among us, the unborn. These efforts allow me to give back in a meaningful way, contributing to causes that aim to strengthen and protect our community.
Faith also plays a large role in how I engage with my community. It inspires me to live a life of service, helping others whenever and however I can. Whether it’s offering my time, sharing my skills, or supporting local initiatives, I view community not just as the place I live, but as the people I’m here to serve. My goal is to leave a positive and lasting impact—through my business, through volunteer work, and through everyday acts of kindness. For me, community isn’t just a backdrop for my life and career—it’s the very foundation upon which I build my work and my relationships. It gives me purpose, drives my business, and fuels my desire to make a difference.
