Interior Decorator Beth Baker of Doylestown wanted to give back to the community, and in 2008 she found that opportunity through the Bucks County Housing Group. With the organization's 36 transitional shelter apartments and a shared home with six bedrooms for homeless families, Beth saw a need and recruited volunteers.
In May 2008, Deserving Decor was born- a community of volunteers who donate their time, passion and talent to clean, furnish and decorate transitional homeless shelters for families in Bucks County, PA – using community donated funding, furnishings, household goods and home decor. Although the Bucks County Housing Groups apartments are furnished, often the furniture needs to be refurbished or replaced along with the addition of bedding, towels, art, lamps, window treatments, housewares, home decor and more before a new family moves in.
They've since partnered with other local organizations to expand their reach- United Way of Bucks County (which happens to be run by another 2013 Movers & Shaker) and theKeystone Opportunity Center.
To date, over 100 shelter makeovers have been completed. The 100% volunteer organization is primarily driven by women. Through a great deal of effort on Beth’s and the other volunteers’ parts, Deserving Decor has been able to provide homeless families with functional, comfortable and inviting living spaces to call home while they rebuild their lives.
Personally, Beth also recently overcame tragedy when her son was injured while serving in the military. A friend of Beth, Victoria Cash, explained, “The stress and strain was very tough for her, but her son came through, and she came through even stronger. She's very resilient — very dedicated. With Deserving Decor, she faces daily challenges of getting all the needed makeovers done, finding storage for the donations, getting volunteers to help her.”
