Are you starting the year with a “brand new you” like I always tell myself I’m going to do and then forget about by this time? Don’t worry, I’m not going to post any tips on resolutions or what you should do to change yourself. I’m sure you’ve read enough of that by now. What I’m really excited about for 2012 is the movie line-up. After receiving my weekly email from the County Theater in Doylestown, I’ve become very excited for the upcoming films – The Artist, The Iron Lady, Melancholia among many more! (Also, The Dark Knight Rises in the summer!!!)

This got me thinking about one of my favorite movie dates. It was with a Princeton grad and we saw Black Swan, which was excellent, in my opinion.

When the movie was over, we went to a nearby bar, ordered beers, and he proceeded to talk about the film. Now generally, when I’ve been on movie dates it always follows with, “So, what’dya think?” Followed by, “Not bad!” or “I really liked it!” and that’s that. Instead, this guy took it a step further.

“The cinematography of that film really blew me away. It was incredible the he [insert artsy, hipster comments] What did you think?”

Cinematography..?

I was both taken aback and pleasantly surprised with where this was going. There’s nothing like a nice, intellectual conversation over beers. I really enjoyed myself and realized that it was the conversation over the film that followed which makes me appreciate this particular date.

Movie dates are great second dates. You need a dinner/lunch date to first get to know a guy a bit better, but since there’s no talking during a movie, it’s the conversation that follows that will be the most interesting. You’ll be able to analyze this new guy and see how he interprets/reacts/thinks about certain topics. I’m not saying this is for everyone, but things like this definitely allow you to see a person on a different level.

Bucks County is fortunate to have the County Theater, which highlights and shows not only great independent films, but also classic films, children’s matinees, and much more. So here’s a to-do for this new year: Go on a movie date and see an indie film at the County (or there’s the one in Ambler if it’s easier for you) and then discuss it with your date after. You may be surprised what you discover!

Oh and forget that “get healthy” resolution for 2 hours and get the darn butter on your popcorn. That’s one of the best parts of going to the movies!

Happy viewing!
