The train tracks that run by Steam Pub in Southampton helped shape the name and style of the restaurant, and for a second time, those tracks have sparked another big idea.
That stretch of tracks have been out of use since 1983, but they are ready to have riders again, just not by train. Those tracks were identified to be part of the “Rails to Trails” beautification project which will convert them from abandoned train tracks into a new hiking and biking trail. The two and a half mile conversion in Southampton is already underway. And as the conversion approaches Steam Pub they want to make their own mark on their patch of trail.
They have a plan to update their patio to make it easy for future trail riders to use. Steam Pub Owner Martin Hoeger gave us a sneak peek at what they have designed. They are planning to nearly double their current outdoor capacity and include a step down from the upper deck down to the trail. At the base of the steps, there will be bike racks so that people riding the trail can safely park their bicycle and come up for a bite to eat.
There will be additions to the menu to accommodate trail users as well. The new menu items will be healthy, quick service items meant to serve hikers and bikers and get them back on their way. The thoughtful expansion even includes considerations for pets. There will be benches along the trail and a water trough for dogs.
The completed project should complement the new trail beautifully. “I hope that we can add a visually appealing space, not only from the deck but from the center of town looking in as well,” said Martin.
Steam Pub is located at 606 2nd Street Pike Southampton, PA 18966. For more information visit them on the web at steampub.com.
