A Sign

A little more than six years ago a for sale sign at the end of a private road caught Mike Bergen’s eye while he was out for a jog. His curiosity led to a labor of love, some wonderful discoveries, and a wedding.

Bergen is blessed with a blended family and a partner with a great eye for design. Mike and Bronwyn have a lot of experience in renovation, and Bronwyn enjoys using her redesign and staging certification for the benefit of the family. Bringing the two families together under a larger roof was a challenge the couple was ready to take on and when they discovered the home they immediately recognized a grand Bucks County diamond in the rough.

“The bones of the house were beautiful,” Bergen explains. “The woodwork, wide plank floors and stonework both inside and outside were exceptional, it just needed someone to recognize the potential.”

Bronwyn is quick to agree, sharing that the couple noticed the positives of the unique estate and were rewarded with some wonderful surprises.

Hidden Gems

Overgrown shrubbery, cut back, revealed hidden paved pathways meandering throughout the property and even a pond system with hidden waterfall came to light. The Bergen’s were so impressed with the spectacular ten and a half acre Upper Makefield property that as part of an extensive remodeling project encompassing the kitchen and all seven bathrooms, they also added an impressive atrium with floor to ceiling glass doors and windows on all sides. They also included a see-through fireplace to bring the beautiful outside in.

Bronwyn jokes that even her most challenging time of year in the northeast was easier in the unique space, with the fireplace warding off any chill from the snow falling all around.

The Bergen’s especially had the kid’s happiness in mind when renovating the home. In addition to the existing pool and basketball court, they also added a sand volleyball court and fire pit and the blended family enjoys utilizing the outside space above all else. “We love the privacy,” explains Bergen, “the teenagers could play basketball at midnight and it doesn't bother anyone.”

The Wedding

Three years ago the family home served as the venue for the couple’s wedding which was held next to the rediscovered hidden waterfall in an intimate ceremony with family and friends. The home has also hosted several large Bucks County parties, graduation and photography events.

As the kids have made their way off to college with only one now remaining, the Bergen family has decided to take on a new project and their home will be listed on the market soon. “We would love to see another family come into this home to build their own memories,” says Bergen,“ and to bring happiness and joy to a new family and have their kids make a home here.”
