Martin Luther King Jr. Day on January 20, 2020 marks the 25th anniversary of the day of service that celebrates the Civil Rights leader's life and legacy. Considered “a day on, not a day off,” it's the perfect opportunity to look for ways you can make a difference in your community! Below, you'll find a list of just 9 events in honor of the holiday. (There's sure to be even more in your area!)

St. Paul's Lutheran Church

When: January 20 from 10 a.m. to noon (or until supplies run out)
Where: 301 N. Main Street, Doylestown

Help assemble Breakfast Bags and a coloring page for elderly and frail neighbors. This is a wonderful intergenerational service project, ideal for students in 1st through 5th grades. Volunteers are asked to bring one (or more) of the following food items to donate: packages of single-serve fruit cups, instant oatmeal of cream of wheat (boxes of single serve packets), granola bars, juice boxes, single-serving cereal boxes, single-serving decaf coffee or tea packs, gallon ziploc bags. Weiss, Wegman's and McCaffrey's have also donated supplies.

Bristol Marsh Nature Preserve

When: January 20 from 10 a.m. to noon
Where: 350 Basin Park, Bristol

Help Heritage Conservancy clean up trash at Bristol Marsh Nature Preserve for the MLK Day of Service.  The more trash we collect, the less that will get washed into our waterways! Contact Liz at ebarmach@heritageconservancy.org or 215-345-7020 ext. 105 for more information or to sign up. All volunteers under the age of 18 must be accompanied by an adult.

Warminster Township Free Library

When: January 20 from 10 a.m. to 5 p.m.
Where: 1076 Emma Lane, Warminster

Come for a few hours, or spend the whole day! Help tidy up the library and/or participate in projects that help give back to local organizations. Some of the activities include weaving plastic yarn mats for the homeless, coloring pages to send to troops and senior citizens, creating pet toys, and more. There will also be scheduled programs such as story time at 10:30 a.m., a screening of “Ruby Bridges” at 2 p.m., teen button making at 4:30 p.m. and a screening of “The Rose Parks Story” at 6 p.m. You can also bring donations for the local food pantry. All activities are free, and registration is not required.

Ann’s Choice

When: January 20 from 10:30 a.m. to 11:30 a.m.
Where: 30000 Ann’s Choice Way, Warminster

Generation Jive and Ann’s Choice are hosting a special playgroup in honor of Martin Luther King Day. Learn about refugees and make welcome cards for refugee families with friends at Ann's Choice! There will also be songs and games. This event is held in the Rose Garden Building at Ann's. Best for ages toddler through elementary (the residents LOVE seeing babies, too!). Event is free, but please reserve a spot for each child planning to attend.

Woodside Church

When: January 20 from 1 p.m. to 3 p.m.
Where: 1667 Edgewood Road, Yardley

There will be a variety of mission projects to work on to help others in need. This event is for preschoolers through 5th graders and their parents. Register at this link.

Cradles to Crayons at Trevose Fire Company Station

When: January 20 from 10 a.m. to 1 p.m.
Where: 4900 Street Road, Trevose

Trevose Fire Company is partnering with Cradles to Crayons to create KidPacks that are hand-selected with care to meet a child’s specific needs and wants. They will be accepting a wide range of donations of new and gently used goods to be used by children ages newborn through 12. Visit this link for a list of needed items. Second Baptist Church of Doylestown

When: January 20 from 8:30 a.m. to 2 p.m.
Where: 6055 Swamp Road, Fountanville

The Day of Service will begin with an Opening Program to commemorate the day sponsored by CB Cares at 8:30 a.m. This program will provide reflections from our youth on the legacy of Rev. Dr. Martin Luther King, Jr. and transition to a number of service opportunities for you to choose from starting at 10 a.m. Click this link to register for a specific service activity such as creating smile cards, sorting clothes, hats, gloves, and shoes, stuffing teddy bears, sorting canned goods, assembling no-sew blankets, and more. All are welcome!

Family of God Lutheran Church in Buckingham

When: January 20 from 9:30 a.m. to noon
Where: 4770 Route 202, Buckingham

This event is for potty-trained children over the age of 3. There are also opportunities for teen and adult volunteers. Please bring a non-perishable item to donate to the Doylestown Food Pantry. The morning will include fun activities, crafts, service projects, and more. After, there will be a free pizza lunch for all families and volunteers. Register at this link.

Restoration Church in Levittown

When: January 20 from 9 a.m. to 3:30 p.m.
Where: 401 Pinewood Drive, Levittown

Take part in a day of volunteering and serving our community by helping maintain church grounds.  There are a ton of projects to do and none of them require any special skills! This event is recommended for people 8 years of age and older. Come for a few hours or for the whole day. A pizza lunch will be provided for those who work through lunch time.  Sign up here.

Elmwood Park Zoo

When: January 20 from 11 a.m. to 2 p.m.
Where: 1661 Harding Boulevard, Norristown

While not in Bucks County, The Elmwood Park Zoo is close enough that it’s perfect for a day trip when you have the day off. (Even more when it’s for a good cause!) Elmwood Park Zoo is partnering with Mongtomery County SPCA to create toys for some of the zoo animals and dogs at the SPCA. The zoo will provide old tshirts for the toys, but you can also bring your own to donate. In honor of MLK Day of Service, zoo admission will be discounted to $5. You can also bring used stuffed animals to donate to Glad Dogs Nation, who will repurpose the stuffed animals into dog toys.
