2017 Bucks Happening Summer Guide

School’s out for summer, sun and fun abound, which means you will be on the look-out for activities that are family friendly and life enhancing. Creating treasured memories is part of the allure of summer. Bucks County is known for its arts and cultural scene. It is no accident that it is referred to as The Genius Belt since many creative icons have made their home here, such as Oscar Hammerstein, James A. Michener, George S. Kaufman, Moss Hart and Pearl S. Buck. The landscape lends itself to hiking and biking, picnicking and swimming. For those who simply want to chill, there are parks in which you can spread a blanket and gaze at the clouds as they lazily pass overhead. There is something for everyone here in our region that makes it a vacation destination for visitors from around the world. How fortunate we are that these events are in our back yard. You can also check our the Bucks Happening calendar for more fun local happenings.

For Summer 2015, think bright colors, fun prints, and SUNSCREEN! Overexposure to the sun causes sunburn, premature aging, wrinkling, and skin cancer. Melanoma is known for being one of the deadliest cancers, so why you and your family are out enjoying the Summer weather, please do not forget to protect yourself and the ones you love with sunscreen. PS. Reapplying is essential!

Stroll along the Canal

Have you explored the Delaware River Canal?  With scenic views up and down Bucks County, you can take a leisurely walk or bike ride (there are several bike rental shops such as Greenway & Pure Energy Cycling).  Many lovely Bucks County riverside towns are connected by the canal, so if you are athletic enough you might want to visit a few.  If you find that you really love the canal and want to know more, please check out Friends of the Delaware Canal.

Visit the Parks of Bucks County

Have a picnic, rent a kayak, explore a hiking trail, ride a horse, play some tennis.  There are so many fun activities that the parks in our area have to offer!  Check out Core Creek Park (Newtown), Lake Towhee Park (Applebachsville), Peace Valley Park (Doylestown/New Britain), Playwicki Park (Langhorne), Ringing Rocks Park (Upper Black Eddy), Silver Lake Park (Bristol), Tinicum Park (Erwinna) or Tohickon Valley Park (Point Pleasant).  Even further, there are a few PA State Parks in Bucks County too: Nockamixon (Quakertown), Ralph Stover (Upper Black Eddy), Tyler (Newtown), Neshaminy (Bensalem) & Delaware Canal (Upper Blck Eddy).  Canoe at Tyler State Park

Golf at a Bucks County public course

There are plenty of great places to get out and play in our area.  I personally think Makefield Highlands (Yardley) is beautiful. There is also Five Ponds (Warminster),   The Bucks Club (Jamison), Northampton (Richboro) and Middletown (Langhorne).

Frisbee Golf

You heard me.  Think of golf.  Ok, now take away the golf balls, the clubs and the holes; add baskets and frisbees and you’ve got Disc Golf.  It’s this hole underground thing.  There’s even an association devoted to managing the disc golfers of the world, not the PGA but the PDGA.  Believe it or not, we have a few courses right here in Bucks County.  There’s even a league in Tyler Park.
