Nothing says Father’s Day like firing up the grill for family and friends. But before the burgers and steaks hit the grates, taking time to properly clean your grill can improve flavor, reduce flare-ups, and extend the life of your equipment.
One of the best ways to deep clean a grill is to start while it’s still slightly warm. Heat the grill for 10–15 minutes to loosen grease and food residue, then turn it off and scrub the grates using a quality grill brush or scraper. For stubborn buildup, soak the grates in hot water mixed with dish soap and baking soda for about 30 minutes before scrubbing clean. A pro cleaning tip many homeowners overlook is cleaning the burners and drip trays. Grease buildup underneath the grill can cause dangerous flare-ups and uneven cooking. Remove the drip pan carefully and scrape away hardened grease with a plastic putty knife or non-abrasive scraper. Vacuuming loose debris from the bottom of the grill can also improve airflow and performance.
For stainless steel grills, wipe down the exterior using a microfiber cloth and a vinegar-and-water solution to cut through fingerprints and smoke residue without damaging the finish.
