October is Breast Cancer Awareness Month, a time to come together, raise awareness and show support for those whose lives have been impacted by breast cancer. From early detection and regular screenings to honoring survivors and supporting those currently undergoing treatment, this month serves as an important reminder of the power of education, research and community.

Throughout Bucks County, local businesses, organizations and residents are coming together through special events, fundraisers and initiatives to make a meaningful difference. Whether you’re looking to give back, spread awareness or support a loved one, there are plenty of ways to get involved. Discover how you can make an impact in Bucks County this October.

  1. Know Your Normal: Get familiar with how your breasts normally look and feel. Pay attention to changes such as lumps, swelling, skin dimpling, nipple discharge or unusual pain.
  2.  Stay Up to Date on Screenings: Early detection can make a significant difference in treatment options and outcomes. The U.S. Preventive Services Task Force recommends mammograms every two years for women ages 40–74 at average risk.
  3. Know Your Family History: Having a family history of breast or ovarian cancer can increase your risk. Talk to relatives about their health history on both sides of your family and share this information with your doctor.
  4. Make Healthy Lifestyle Choices: While there’s no guaranteed way to prevent breast cancer, certain lifestyle habits may help reduce your risk. Stay physically active, maintain a healthy weight, limit or avoid alcohol, and focus on a balanced diet.
  5.  Don’t Ignore Changes or Put Off Appointments: Your health deserves to be a priority. If you notice something unusual, don’t wait until your next annual exam to bring it up. Schedule an appointment with your healthcare provider, ask questions and advocate for yourself.
