How to keep your gutter cleanConsidering the snow and ice we experienced the past two winters, 2012 has treated us pretty well thus far (knock on wood). Take advantage of the mild weather by checking on the condition of your home’s exterior. Small projects like routine gutter maintenance can prevent bigger (and costly) problems in the future.

A gutter problem isn’t just a gutter problem. It’s a problem for your entire property. If left unmaintained, the ground around your house gets saturated, which creates a breeding ground for mold and mildew that eats away at your home’s foundation and the basement walls. Cracks and leaks may develop, which worsen quickly in the winter due to the ground freezing and expanding. Water damage can destroy entire homes.

Don’t let these issues become your issues. Tackle these common gutter problems this weekend:

  • Clogged gutters. The most common gutter problem of all, clogged gutters are useless gutters. The easy fix: clean them! Break out that ladder and get climbing. Once you’ve removed the debris, flush your gutters with your hose.
  • Sagging gutters. Gutters begin to sag when the hangers weaken or the fasteners become loose. Take a quick trip to your local home improvement store, where each hanger should run you less than $10, and each fastener about $1.
  • Leaky gutters. If you have small holes in your gutter, patch them with gutter sealant on the inside of the gutter. For bigger leaks, opt for a gutter patching kit, which should cost less than $10.
  • Improperly pitched gutters. For gutters to work as they were intended, they need to be pitched toward the downspout. It should slope about a quarter of an inch for every 10 feet. If you have addressed the clog, sag, or leak, and you still have standing water in your gutter, it’s likely that your gutter is improperly pitched. To fix this yourself,  bend the hanger to push the gutter into place correctly.
