What does it take to be successful as a general contractor?
It’s a question that goes far beyond tools and timber. We sat down with Steve Bohn, founder of Milex Residential, to hear how his path—from apprenticing under an old-school carpenter to running multi-million dollar commercial jobs—shaped the way he approaches residential construction in Bucks County today.
Steve’s story starts like many great ones do — with curiosity and a set of calloused hands. After high school, he juggled college classes and construction jobs, but it didn’t take long for him to realize where his real passion was. He left college behind and dove headfirst into carpentry, learning the craft from a seasoned builder from North Carolina who specialized in custom homes. “I was basically his apprentice for years,” Steve says. “That’s where I learned everything.”
That early foundation was strengthened by a lifetime of hands-on problem solving. His father, the kind of guy who could fix anything, instilled in Steve both confidence and capability. “I knew how to work on cars, how to build things — it all came together naturally.”
As the economy shifted during the recession, Steve transitioned into commercial construction, where he quickly climbed the ranks. By 2017, he was managing a $10 million EDA project as the sole superintendent — coordinating every detail from groundbreaking to ribbon-cutting.
But as residential construction began to rebound, Steve saw an opportunity to bring everything he’d learned back home — both literally and professionally. That same year, he founded Milex Residential, a company built on the principles of craftsmanship, efficiency, and integrity.
Today, Milex specializes in large-scale renovations, additions, and new construction projects across Bucks County. From historic homes dating back 200 years to full gut remodels of more modern builds, their team handles every stage — from initial concept to final walk-through. As a design-build firm, Milex simplifies the process for homeowners, serving as both creative partner and project manager.
One thing that sets Milex apart is how they’ve adapted commercial systems to residential work. “We run like a well-oiled machine,” Steve explains. “We use AIA-style contracts, schedule-of-values invoicing — it’s structured, predictable, and professional.” But at the same time, he emphasizes, it’s still a small, family-oriented business at heart.
And that heart shows in the people. “Our employees are our greatest asset,” Steve says. “We hire people we can trust — not just with the work, but with our reputation.”
After hundreds of completed projects in the region, Steve Bohn and Milex Residential have built more than homes — they’ve built something rare in the industry: a business rooted in old-school craftsmanship, sharpened by commercial expertise, and powered by people who care.
The team at Milex Residential has nearly a century of combined experience in home remodeling, renovations, remediations, and new construction. From attention to detail, seeking out quality materials and craftsmanship, to old-fashioned customer service, the Milex approach has been forged in the field. Milex Residential is experienced in all facets of construction and remodeling, including demolition, remediation, historical renovation, project management, and commercial construction.
