Everyday begins with a Green Monster- Kale, Romaine, Garlic, Lemon, Ginger, Apple, & Cucumber
We've officially made it halfway through our Nutrition-in-Motion detox. (Woohoo!) Over the past 7 days, we've experienced ups and downs, but overall, we feel great, have lost a couple pounds, and aren't having as much trouble sticking to the cleanse as anticipated. Being that we've been surrounded by lasagna, ravioli, wine, FREE appetizers, movie theater popcorn, and other delicious goodies throughout the week and still stuck to our plan, we are feeling pretty confident and bet that most everyone could stick to this plan for two weeks.
The Challenges:
– Okay, we admit it; the pasta, cheese, drinks, and other delicious foods have been a constant temptation. The key to resisting that temptation, however, has been staying full on detox-friendly foods. It takes a fair amount of prep work, but we've stocked the house with homemade hummus and guacamole, pre-chopped veggies, hearty soups & chilis, and raw nuts. We've even baked our own apple chips and blended up fruit smoothies to fight a sweet tooth. In addition, Joanna from Nutrition-in-Motion sends us daily motivational emails with great detox tips to help us through the rough patches.

– The weekend: A detox does pose some challenges to your weekend plans. Going out to dinner is possible, but a restaurant should be carefully selected. I actually tried New Hope's vegetarian restaurant, Sprig & Vine, which was delicious (look for our review to come out later this week). Angela, on the other hand, was going to dinner at a friends house and opted to bring along some detox-friendly foods for everyone to share like roasted veggies and potatoes. If you decide to do a detox, make sure to check your weekend plans out.
The Triumphs:
– The first really exciting thing was realizing that detox food does not necessarily mean bad food. We've feasted on butternut squash soup with cinnamon, Roasted Eggplant Caponata, sauteed mushrooms with fresh rosemary, mashed cauliflower, baked apple chips, guacamole and more. We've also discovered a new found love for Almond Milk.
Butternut squash with sauteed mushrooms- YUM!
– Day 4 energy boost: I've heard from a few friends who have completed detoxes that Day 4 is when you begin to feel the effects so I was curious to find out if that worked for me. Well, it definitely did. Last Thursday, I had more natural energy than if I had started the day with a double espresso. At 5am, I was asked by my boyfriend to “bring it down a notch” and believe me, I am not usually a morning person. It felt fantastic!
– Weight loss: We've already lost a couple of pounds! After weighing in at the gym yesterday, it's official and the triumph provides a bit of extra motivation for us in week 2.
– Learning: While I admit that I could not permanently stay on this detox diet, I certainly intend to integrate some of the recipes we've used into my normal diet. It's been extremely empowering to realize that I can easily make my own fresh hummus or even realizing that I can enjoy root vegetables as my carbs rather than pasta.
Welcome week 2! We've got this 🙂
