Sweating in hot yoga warms your muscles, prevent injuries, cools the body, & flushes toxins

I stood there, my limbs tangled into an unnatural position while balancing on one foot; my mind fixated on the tiny droplet of sweat dangling from the tip of my nose.  Though standing completely still, my heart was racing as if I was sprinting for my life. All the while, the instructor, Alison, was talking us through the pain, correcting our posture, and motivating the class to push ourselves further.  With each pose, I felt split between pain and ultimate relief as I used muscles that had long been ignored.  Though I was struggling with each movement, I could also feel my body tapping into the root of some of it's aches and pains.  For all those people out there who don't think yoga is a challenging workout, “If they could only try this,” I thought.  So begins the hot yoga challenge…

Maybe by day 30 of the hot yoga challenge, I'll be able to do this... 🙂

So how did this all start? Well, you know how it goes.  In the winter, you tell yourself it's okay to eat a few extra servings at dinner because you have MONTHS before bathing suit season. Cold nights are spent curled under a blanket on the sofa watching a movie.  Before you know it, spring flies by and you aren't quite ready to hit the beach.  With June already upon us, I knew it was time to do something drastic to both look and feel better.  Having experimented with hot yoga in the past, I knew it was one hell of a workout and had the ability to drastically affect one's body.  Still, it had been almost a year since I'd gone to class so I knew this would be a major challenge.

I decided to check out Riverflow Yoga, a hot yoga studio located in Lambertville. Their website explained the various benefits of hot yoga including weight loss– helping to build sleek muscles that sculpt and reshape your body beautifully. I'm not one of those people fixated on the scale; for me, it's more about feeling toned and healthy.  I also checked out the “Yoga for Weight Loss” Calories-burned calculator, which showed I would burn almost 1,000 calories during 1 session of hot yoga.  After much consideration, I decided to challenge myself throughout the month of June to take as much hot yoga as possible.

Having completed my first 90 minutes class yesterday, I've already felt major effects on my body. First, I experienced that blissful post-yoga glow that comes after detoxifying your body in 100 degree temperatures. Class had cleared my head, and I felt on top of the world.  The next morning, however, I woke up to very sore muscles, making everyday tasks like showering and taking out the trash incredibly painful! It's now been 24 hours and I am ready for class #2 and 3 and 4…. I know this is only the beginning, but I can't wait share my hot yoga challenge with you!

Follow Riverflow Yoga on Facebook & Twitter for more information on hot yoga and check back on Bucks Happening throughout June for more updates on our challenge.
