At Bucks Happening, we're always looking for ways to improve our health and wellness. We've tried acupuncture, a variety of exercise activities all around Bucks County, and our most recent adventure- a dietary cleanse. Suffering from frequent migraine headaches, I'm personally always on the look out for alternative treatments to replace the heavy medication I take to relieve pain, something that can get to the root of the problem rather than just treat the symptoms.  I admit that I was not very familiar with Shiatsu Massage, but after reading about Lucy Goldstein from Shiatsu Therapy Plus, based out of lower Bucks County, I immediately knew it was something I wanted to try.

So what is Shiatsu ?

“Shi” – “`a” – “tsu” literally means finger pressure. Sometimes called Shiatsu Massage, it is a form of Japanese Manual Body Therapy that has its foundation in Oriental Medical Theory. Acupressure (Acupuncture without needles) or Acupressure Massage is another name for this therapy.  In addition to Shiatsu, Lucy is also knowledgable in Thai Massage Stretches, sometimes called “Passive Yoga,” and of Trigger Point Therapy, which is actually a product of Western science. Trigger Point Therapy has been successful in solving many mysteries of body aches and pain.

Lucy uses her expertise to combine all of those therapies to best treat a patient, and even offers a diverse range of services that can further assist patients in healing, including dietary suggestions based Oriental Medical Theory; Ergonomic Recommendations, and even Hair Mineral Analysis.

Still a skeptic?

Did you know that research shows that 95% of trigger points discovered by Western knowledge in the mid of the 20th century coincide with Acupressure points used for the last 2,000 years in the East?

In addition to the unique treatment that combines best of insights of  Eastern and Western therapies, Shiatsu Therapy Plus stood out because of Lucy's passion for alternative healing.  Having earned a Masters degree in Engineering and Mathematics, Lucy had worked for 15 years as a programmer in Philadelphia. However, her passion for Shiatsu was so great that she left her career to pursue her passion for alternative healing.

Bucks Happening's Shiatsu Experience:

I recently met with Lucy for my first Shiatsu experience, and it was amazingly eye-opening! We began the session with Lucy explaining the various schools of thought in acupressure treatment. She listened to my health concerns, which primarily concerned my migraines. Lucy also explained that many times, people undergoing Shiatsu treatment experience a range of healing, both physically and mentally. However, after several failed attempts to treat my terrible migraines I must admit that I was a bit jaded.  Keeping an open mind, though, I remained guardedly hopeful that Shiatsu could be the treatment I had been waiting for.

We began a series of massage and stretches, and within just ten minutes, I experienced a revelation about my migraine pain. As Lucy pin-pointed the knots in my shoulder blades that often accompany my headaches, she made her way down a line of connected pressure points throughout my body. As soon as she reached my thigh, a sharp pain triggered a memory of a running injury I had sustained in college. While for years I had been concentrating on stretching my back and shoulders to relieve migraine pain, the root of the problem was in my hip & thigh all along. Having never sufficiently treated the injury, the right side of my body had been compensating for eight years of pain, causing horrible shoulder and ultimately head pain. Suddenly, it all made so much sense! Since that session, I have been stretching my leg, rather than my back, and have experienced a drastic decrease in migraine headaches.

Shiatsu Therapy Plus offers general treatment for well-being, structural realignment to relieve back pain; headaches; sciatica; and sinuses, women's health including pregnancy treatment, and emotional help including anxiety and depression.  You might be surprised to find out that Shiatsu Therapy Plus is actually cheaper than a massage at most spa's with a 1 hour treatment running $65 ($95 for 90 minutes & $40 for 30 minutes).  The best deal, though, is purchasing a package- five 1 hour sessions at $55 per session or ten 1 hour sessions at $50 per session.

Happy healing!!
