40-love-pro-shop-tennis-doylestownNo matter the day, no matter the Bucks County town, they exist.  The women in their fashionable garb, the men slightly less interested in what they are wearing (but not always!).  Super tone legs and butt.  The tennis players!!

The obsession is alive and well here.  Some of my Bucks County tennis player friends have told me they “work to support their tennis habit.”  Some belong to multiple indoor and outdoor leagues throughout the year.  Others play privately in their own courts.  Friendships are made.  Rivalries are made.  But one thing is for sure, Bucks County tennis is a whole different animal.

As players ramp up for spring tennis, our friends over at 40 Love Pro Shop (they are right across from the Starbucks on State Street in Doylestown) wanted to share 3 easy injury prevention tips with everyone. Bucks County young natives Maria Paone & John Curry are passionate about the game, and it shows through in their new business.

40-love-pro-shop-tennis-doylestownSave your shoulders with shock absorption! Simply restringing your racket has a huge impact in preventing elbow & shoulder injuries.  Many players wait too long to restring; dead strings do nothing to absorb shock which will carry up your wrist to your elbow and shoulder. Playing with fresh strings can not only improve your game, but it will keep you off the injured list! General rule is if you play once a week, restring once a year, if you play 3 times a week you should restring 3 times a year. Of course, if your begin to experience pain or a difference in your game, restring earlier.  At 40 Love Pro Shop, stringing prices start at $25, but when you restring your racket 4 times the 5th restringing is free. The 40 Love Pros will custom fit you with the best strings for you based on level and type of play.

Another simple way to increase shock absorption is by changing the grip on your racket.  Talk about bang for your buck, 40 Love re-grips rackets for $10 and the change in comfort and shock absorption can be a game changer.

All rackets are not created equal. John and Maria are extremely knowledgeable and can help you find the perfect your game by perfecting your racket.  For example, a lighter racket with a heavy head is worse on a player's arm than a heavier racket with a light head. 40 Love has plenty of demo rackets to play with before you commit to purchasing your racket. That way you can be certain that your racket fits you as perfectly as Cinderella's slipper.

40-love-pro-shop-tennis-doylestownSpeaking of footwear…. Never neglect your feet! Proper tennis shoes should be worn to protect the ankles from injury. The wrong footwear can cause ankle sprains, plantar fasciitis, stress fractures, and shin splints. Knee and hip pain can also be attributed to improper or worn out shoes. Do not play in over-worn tennis shoes! You know when it's time to get a new pair when if you notice the smooth spots in the read pattern or the tread is less distinct. This can cause slipping and possible injury on court. Sometimes the cushion wears before the tread and you will notice less support laterally or that you are late getting to the ball. The cushion protects your ankles and foot from rolling or stress fractures.
