been doing out best to try to get the complete story about the two dueling Newtown Brewfests, both scheduled for Fall 2010, so that we can clear everything up for you, our readers. We've received slightly different stories from each side so we'll do our best to just present the facts and let you decide the rest. When did grabbing a drink become so complicated??
This is what we know- right now there are 2 brewfests scheduled. A couple of weeks back, we posted that the Newtown Blues & Brews Festival tickets went on sale. The event, hosted by the Newtown Fire Association, is scheduled to be held 9/25/10, and will take place at the Stocking Works, where past brewfests in town have been held. We were also informed that over 60 breweries have agreed to participate in this festival. A source from the Blues & Brews festival committee said that a group of volunteers chose to organize a new event due to allegations that the previous event committee had “disturbing issues that a non-profit entity shouldn’t have.” The proceeds from the Blues & Brews Festival will go primarily to the local fire & police department.
Last week we received notice that the 5th Annual Newtown Brewfest will be held 10/16/2010. This event is being hosted by the Newtown Corporation, which has always thrown the event in the past. Tickets have not gone on sale yet for this event, and we were told that more information will be provided soon. The Newtown Corporation lists their mission as “to foster a strong business environment while maintaining harmony with surrounding neighborhoods and preserving Newtown’s rich historical character.” Newtown Corporation recently ended their contract with the Newtown Borough Council in order to “be more dynamic” and “to accomplish (our) goals without burdening the tax bases of the Newtown communities.”
Of course, the heart of this brewfest battle appears to be rooted in the argument between the Newtown Borough Council & Newtown Corporation. While we still do not have all of the facts of this disagreement, we felt it was important to let our readers know what we've learned as soon as possible since it may affect your purchase.
At Bucks Happening, we hope that the disagreements between these two groups can be resolved so that the focus of the festivals can return to celebrating the spirit of the craft brewing industry within our community. We will keep everyone posted with further developments.
